The walled garden
Original acrylic painting on canvas board

This painting was inspired by one of my favourite gardens to visit here in Belgium — a beautiful old walled garden that always feels quietly timeless.

At the centre sits a charming orangerie, and surrounding it each summer is the most wonderful display of dahlias. Row upon row of them bloom in every colour imaginable, creating what truly feels like a sea of flowers gently moving in the warm air.

Whenever I visit, I’m reminded of the old British gardens I have always loved — places that feel both carefully tended and softly abundant, where flowers are allowed to grow with a sense of joyful generosity.

Walking through the garden when the dahlias are at their height is such a delight. Their colours seem to glow against the greenery, each flower unique yet together forming a tapestry of shape and colour.

I painted this piece to capture that feeling of standing within the garden — surrounded by blooms, warmed by the summer air, and quietly appreciating the beauty of a place created simply for the love of flowers.

Though this painting has now been collected, I hope it still offers a glimpse into that garden moment — a celebration of colour, abundance, and the timeless charm of a summer garden in bloom.
