This painting was inspired by the wild yet peaceful beauty of the Scottish landscape — a place that has always held a special place in my heart.
My Granny was Scottish, and perhaps because of that I’ve always felt a deep affection for the wildness and open skies. I can imagine camping there under the stars. Scotland has a way of feeling both untamed and comforting at the same time.
In this scene, late summer has arrived and the heather is in bloom, transforming the hills into gentle shades of dusky pinks and soft purples. As the day begins to draw to a close, the golden evening light touches the land and a distant loch shimmers like silver beneath the fading sky.
While painting the loch, I noticed something rather lovely — its shape had formed into a small heart. It felt like one of those tiny, unexpected gifts that appear in nature when we pause long enough to notice.
The word bonnie was often used in our home growing up — a warm Scots expression for something beautiful or pleasing to the eye and spirit.
I named this painting A Bonnie Day in that same spirit — a quiet celebration of nature, memory, and those moments of peaceful and yet wild beauty that stay with us long after the day has ended.
